It's raining hard this evening. Not the kind of rain that flows lazily through gutters, making a musical trek from roof to yard. I'm talking sheets of rain, blowing sideways against the house. A howling wind is slapping rain against the window of my study in a pounding rhythm, and I can hear passing cars splashing puddles in all directions.
This week's forecast promises more of the same. It's sure not photo-taking weather by any means, but that's ok. It's a good time to dig deep for inspiration, and my backed-up photo files have plenty to choose from.
Have I mentioned that many of my floral photos come from my own backyard? A few years ago, I had one of those Aha! moments, and thought, what if I dug up most of this lawn and planted flowerbeds instead? That's exactly what I did (and DH thanked me for helping him cut back on mowing) and I've never regretted it. I love traveling and heading out for a photo adventure, but sometimes I like to just step out the back door, pull up a Rubbermaid stool, and lean in close to shoot pics of my very own flowers. If I do it before the neighbors are up (I'm an earlybird), I can get away with wearing my comfy jammies, too.
Now that Summer's flowers are long gone and Fall rains are turning my flowerbeds into sad, soggy messes, it's time to shift mental gears. By the time Winter shows up, I'll be so starved for color, I'll visit a local flower shop and buy a mixed bouquet. Me and my Canon can squeeze a lot of macro mileage out of a big bunch of assorted flowers.

Beautiful photography...a girl after my own heart. I love my flowers , my gardens and a good rain. Winter is a very hard time for me, I really need my daily dose of sunshine...I too will turn to photographing market flowers. Love your blog.

No, I don't shoot in the rain. I've seen so-called rainproof camera covers, but I usually just wait out the rain. Not quite brave enough to risk getting my equipment wet.
These images are breathtaking! Isn't it a joy to find beauty right here at home?! I have a creek at the back of my yard. In the winter it is easier to scamper down the bank after the undergrowth has died back. When we get our very few icy, snowy days in Georgia I love to capture my little creek covered in crystal! :)
