Pumpkins on Parade

"Wagonful of Pumpkins"

I'll tell you a dirty little secret if you promise not to hate me. I have never made a pumpkin pie or pumpkin anything from a fresh pumpkin. How pathetic is that? I just drive to the store and buy a big can of pumpkin.  And you know what? My pies taste as good or sometimes better than any store-bought pie around.  If that sounds close to bragging, it probably is. My mom taught me to make a mean pumpkin pie, and I've been at it since I was four, and created a lopsided little pie for my daddy. So there.

But now that the BPA police are swarming the canned goods aisle, I wonder if it might be time to stick my hands inside a stringy pumpkin and do what half the world has been doing for decades: bake a real, honest-to-goodness pumpkin pie straight from the farmer's field.  (Disclaimer: If I end up caving to the call of the canned version because of the holiday rush, I probably won't divulge that news here. So see? You will just have to wonder.)

And speaking of pumpkins, did you know, Native Americans used to slice pumpkins into strips, dry them, and weave them into mats? Can you imagine a pumpkin throw rug? Wow. Makes me feel downright UNcraftsy.

Let's take a look at what others are doing to celebrate this historic member of the Cucurbita family (which includes cousins Cucumber and uncle Squash). Etsians are obviously in the pumpkin mood. What fun to discover the following:
"Autumn Pumpkin-Goatmilk Soap"

"PDF ePattern Simple Pumpkin"
"Original Painting Autumn Tree Pumpkins"

"Autumn Pumpkin Blank Greeting Card"
"Big Pumpkins Earrings"
"3 Dozen Tiny Pumpkin Cookies"
Here's to pumpkins in every shape and form. And here's to baking something delicious with Cucumber's cousin.
Now, if you feel an irresistible urge to share your favorite PUMPKIN RECIPES, I won't stop you. Leave it in your comment section with a link (if it's at a blog or website) or go ahead and share it in full in that space.

Who knows, you might even inspire me to lop the top off a real pumpkin, clean out the strings and seeds, and pretend I've never resorted to those awful BPA-filled, sorry-excuse-for-a-pumpkin cans of mush.

  2. Jeanne, thank you! Your Pumpkin Orange Bread sounds really tasty. I like that it has ingredients that are usually on hand, too--nothing unusual that I would have to chase down. I'm eager to try it.
