Sleep and Creativity

"Unlikely Pair"

Did you know that the human brain operates on the same amount of energy as a 10-watt bulb? It continues at that level even as we sleep.  Hmmm. That might explain the crazy dreams I have, or the mornings when I wake up with an idea so clear, I have to hurry and write it down. Seems my creative side works better when I'm asleep.

Sleep studies point to some interesting tie-ins between sleep and creativity. For those of us who lean towards insomnia (as I sometimes do), we might think we're feeding our creative muse during those hours of wakefulness, but in reality we aren't. Sleep is essential and in fact, has been said to fuel creativity.

With that said, I'd like to pop a question. What do you do when insomnia strikes? Do you crawl out of bed and do something creative? Read a book? Fix yourself a cup of chamomile tea?

Leave a comment. I'd love to hear what works for you.

  1. I have to read everynight in bed,not that I mind I am a bookworm. It helps to calm my mind down so I finally get some sleep. I have taken nyquil before when sleep wouldn't come, haha.

  2. I hate insomnia. Usually I tough it out in bed just tossing and turning. If my ipod is nearby, I've tried reading my kindle books as with that app I don't have to turn on the light (and reading is so good at putting me to sleep). When I go on a brisk 45 minute walk sometime during the day, I sleep better than if I veg all day.
